Biography
Since completing my PGCE in 2002 I have worked in several different secondary schools in Essex. I have always taught examination groups at GCSE and A Level, so am very familiar with the demands of public examinations. I have experience of all the major exam boards and have worked as an examiner with AQA on multiple occasions. I have taught across all ability ranges over the years so have a range of approaches and strategies that can help students lacking in confidence and self belief. The school environment can be challenging, and large groups sizes mean that most students get very little individual help and feedback. My experience means that I am also familiar with the vast majority of texts that students may be studying for their upcoming examinations.

Are you a qualified teacher?
Yes I am. I finished my B.A (Hons) in 1998, my MSc in 1999 and my PGCE in 2002. I'm happy to provide you with evidence of my qualifications.
What subjects can you offer?
I can provide preparation for all public examinations in English and Sociology. I can also offer support for students in KS3 or for those that may have missed elements of their education.
What sort of lessons do you offer?
I usually offer lessons lasting one hour for individual students. However, other lesson timings can be accommodated. I can also offer lessons to pairs of students together. In some circumstances this can be very effective.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require a minimum of 24 hours' notice for session cancellations or rescheduling. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice may be charged at the full session rate.
Is private tuition worth it?
It is with a qualified, experienced teacher. Most school-based teachers do a great job, and really care about their students. However, class sizes in mainstream schools are so large, teachers are unable to provide the individual and targeted support that I offer. Having spent over two decades as a teacher, I know the areas that students tend to find difficult, (looking at you English Lit paper 2) and can offer the help that students need.
Do you offer online or in-person sessions?
I can offer both. I'm based in Great Bentley, so am convenient for Alresford, Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea. However, I can teach using Google Meet for those that are not in the local area, or where travelling is difficult. I like to arrange a free, no obligation meeting in person before any tutoring takes place.
Do you have a police check?
Like all qualified teachers I have undergone an enhanced DBS check. I'm happy to share my DBS number with you.
Is online tutoring effective?
Yes, online tutoring can be just as effective. Many of the negative perceptions arose because of the enforced online sessions caused by the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. One-to-one online tutoring is completely different, and can make life more convenient for all involved. The key factor to any tuition is that the student wants to be there, and wants to make progress. This is true whether in person or online.
Do you provide study materials?
I have a range of materials and study techniques that I have built up over the years. I can provide these to be used in conjunction with school issued materials.
